Musical Workshops and Events

 

She has worked actively for an organization called Youth Association for Classical Music (YACM), Chennai, as an executive committee member for more than 5 years. This organisation which evolved in the 1980s has done pioneer work in bringing about a total change in the classical music scenario, from giving platforms to talented youngsters to creating good listeners among the youth.
Member of the EC of YACM from 1995 – 2001. Conducted many workshops on awareness of classical music in different schools in the city under the “BUILD-A-RASIKA” scheme organised by YACM during that period.

1995-1996 Assistant director to Guru Smt Charumati Ramachandran for her opera productions – Sri Krishna Madhuri, Meera, which ran to packed audiences.

1999 Participated in a unique show which was held to celebrate the centenary of the famous writer ‘Kalki’. This programme was conceived by his grand daughter, Smt Gowri Ramnarayanan, and featured other famous artists like Sanjay Subrahmanyan, Vijay Siva, Bombay Jayashri, S Sowmya, T M Krishna and others. All the great stalwarts, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Smt M S Subbulakshmi, and Smt D K Pattammal graced the show with their esteemed presence.

2000 - The ‘MILLENNIUM SHOW’ was a grand musical extravaganza conceived and produced by YACM on the New Year eve of 2000, at the Music Academy, featuring over 75 artistes, 600 school students and unique combination performances by all the stalwarts. Sangeetha worked very closely with all the stars Vijay Siva, Sanjay Subrahmanyam, Sudha Raghunathan, Bombay Jayshree, T.M. Krishna and many others. The finale for the show was a unique presentation of the song ‘Maithreem Bajatha’ which was performed by 600 school children. This feature was entirely coordinated and presented by her.

2005 – 2006 Worked closely with the highly acclaimed writer cum journalist, Smt Gowri Ramnarayanan, in two of her plays, “Dark Horse”, and “Rural Phantasy”.  The “Dark Horse” was based on the poems and life of the great Marathi poet Arun Kolatkar. It was a very intense play, with a brilliant script and worked alongside great  actors like Dhrithiman Chatterji, Bhageerathi Narayanan. The concept was a blend of south Indian classical music with English theatre, the first ever attempt in this art form, the music being a very important part of the script. The experience was challenging, unique and immensely satisfying.

The “Rural Phantasy” was a play based on a short story by the famous Tamil writer, Sri Kalki Krishnamurthy. It was a musical, set in the pre-independence era in one of the small villages of South India. The play was filled with songs of the famous poet Subramania Bharathi, other patriotic songs, all based on the classical idiom.  Worked along with T M Krishna and a group of highly talented actors for this show, which ran to a full house.
