SANGEETHA SIVAKUMAR

Background

 

Sangeetha Sivakumar was brought up in an atmosphere of music and art. She grew up with hearing many great musicians. Her grand uncle, S.Y.Krishnaswamy I.C.S.,  was a great connoisseur and a patron of carnatic music. Her father S.M. Sivakumar was one of the founders of the music organisation in Kochi - Rasikapriya. This gave her the opportunity to hear many stalwarts of Indian classical music and interact with them, while residing in Kochi. Later, she moved to Chennai to pursue music as a career. On the education front she is a graduate of mathematics from Stella Maris College, Chennai.

 

Musical Education

 

While residing in Kochi, she started learning music at the tender age of 9, from Sri K.P. Vasu of Calicut. In 1987, she moved from Kochi to Chennai in order to receive advanced training from the renowned musician, Smt Charumathi Ramachandran. Sangeetha has a mellifluous, resonant voice and her command over the technical aspects of carnatic music is highly appreciated by musicians, critics and rasikas alike. She is an upholder of the G.N.Balasubramaniam bani. Her music is known for its crispness, clarity of thought and presentation. She has the great capacity of being extremely creative within the bounds of tradition and classicism.
